A BRIEF HISTORY

Our history dates back to December 1977 when Wesley United Church, under the direction of The Rev. William Bartlett, initiated plans for a Sunday School in the Cowan Heights Elementary School. It was later determined that there was need for a congregation and assigned the responsibility for its development to The Rev. Bonnie Kelly, who was then a student intern at Mt. Pearl First United Church.

On November 22, 1980, Rev. Bonnie Kelly conducted the first worship service with nine people in attendance. We began to grow and on April 5, 1981, a service was held at Cowan Heights Elementary Auditorium and Cowan Heights Church was officially constituted.

Early in January 1984, a proposal was presented to the Avalon Presbytery for a multi-purpose church complex to be constructed in the Cowan Heights area. On February 14, 1984, our proposal was approved, and in December 1984 the building site on Frecker Drive was acquired from Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation.

The St. John’s Presbytery approved the application for construction of the Church building during February 1985. Site work began in May 1985 and the new building construction began in June 1985. The first service in the new building was held December 22, 1985, and the official opening was held January 26, 1986.
